Spiritual Bypassing & Toxic Positivity: Why 'Good Vibes Only' Hurts
Let me ask you something:
How many times have you been told to "just raise your vibration" when you were actually in pain?
How many times have you been handed a positive affirmation when what you really needed was permission to be pissed off?
How many times have you been made to feel like your anger, your grief, or your fear meant you weren't "spiritual enough"?
If you've spent any time in wellness communities, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
It's called spiritual bypassing, and it's making you sicker.
What Is Spiritual Bypassing?
Spiritual bypassing is using spiritual concepts, practices, or language to avoid dealing with real, uncomfortable emotions.
It sounds like:
- "Everything happens for a reason."
- "Just send them love and light."
- "You're manifesting this negativity."
- "Stay in a high vibration."
- "Let it go and trust the universe."
On the surface, these ideas can be comforting. But when they're used to shut down legitimate feelings—yours or someone else's—they become a form of emotional gaslighting.
They're essentially saying: "Your real feelings aren't welcome here. Pretend to be positive (so you'll eventually believe it), or you're doing spirituality wrong."
The Problem with "Good Vibes Only"
Here's the truth: You can burn sage. You can pull oracle cards. You can pray, meditate, journal, and do all the things.
But if you never let yourself say, "I am fucking furious," your body is still carrying it.
Positive thinking doesn't erase anger. Affirmations don't discharge trauma. And pretending you're not in pain doesn't make the pain go away—it just drives it deeper.
That unprocessed emotion? It lives in your tissues. It weakens your immune system. It shows up as chronic pain, fatigue, anxiety, and disease.
You can be as "high vibe" as you want on the outside, but your body knows the truth.
You Can Be Spiritual AND Pissed Off - the Paradox of Anger
Here's what the spiritual bypassing crowd doesn't want you to know:
You can be deeply spiritual and still be a raging bitch for five minutes. That's allowed.
In fact, that's integration. That's wholeness.
Real spirituality isn't about only feeling the "acceptable" emotions. It's about honoring all of what you feel—the light and the shadow, the gratitude and the rage.
When you give yourself permission to feel the full spectrum of your humanity, that's when real healing happens.
What Real Healing Looks Like
Real healing sounds scary.
It sounds like:
- "I hate you."
- "I'm so fucking mad."
- "I really fucked up."
- "I refuse to forgive you."
That's not negativity. That's honesty.
And honesty is the doorway to actual relief.
Energy Psychology—and specifically my Bitch Tap® method—works with your anger instead of pretending it's not there.
You don't have to slap a positive affirmation on top of your rage. You get to feel it, express it fully, and then—when you're ready—let it go.
Not because you're "supposed to." But because you actually moved the emotion through your body.
The Danger of Premature Forgiveness
One of the most common forms of spiritual bypassing is the pressure to forgive.
"You have to forgive them to be free."
"Holding onto anger only hurts you."
"Let it go."
Here's what I tell my clients: Forgiveness isn't the first step. It's the final step.
You can't skip over the anger and jump straight to forgiveness. That's just more bypassing.
First, you have to let yourself be pissed. You have to say what you need to say. You have get it off your chest to get your power back.
Then—and only then—can you truly forgive.
And if you're not there yet? Rinse and Repeat until you do.
How to Know If You're Spiritually Bypassing
Ask yourself:
- Do I feel guilty when I'm angry or sad?
- Do I apologize for my "negative" emotions?
- Do I tell myself I "shouldn't feel this way"?
- Do I use spiritual language to avoid uncomfortable conversations?
- Do I judge others for not being "positive enough"?
If you answered yes to any of these, you might be bypassing.
And here's the thing: it's not your fault. You were taught this. Wellness culture taught you that anger is "low vibe." Religion might have taught you that good people don't get angry. Self-help gurus told you to just "change your thoughts."
But none of that actually helps you process what's in your body.
Energy Psychology Works WITH Your Truth
This is why I love Energy Psychology, and why I developed Bitch Tap®.
These methods don't ask you to be positive. They ask you to be honest.
You tap on acupressure points while you tell the truth—the raw, unfiltered, "inappropriate" truth.
And your nervous system finally gets to stand down.
You're not bypassing. You're processing.
Permission to Feel It All
If you've been burned by toxic positivity, if you've been shamed for your anger, if you've been told you're "not spiritual enough" because you're human—I see you.
You're not broken. You're not doing it wrong.
You're just finally ready to be honest.
